The Old Grand Junction Depot, Built around 1859

The depot served as a hotel, depot and saloon. Grand Junction was a major hub for the Memphis-Charleston, the Mississippi Central South, and the Tennessee Central. The line coming out of Mississippi was narrow gauge track while the lines running North were regular gauge. This made it necessary to remove the narrow gauge wheels and replace with regular  gauge wheels to continue on. While this was being done, passengers dined, drank and rested in the Depot.

The building was torn down around 1925 and the present building was erected.

Grand Junction, TN - There's a pretty good string of ex-Canadian National 50-foot boxcars stored on the north side of the NS main (foreground).  They're now marked ALAB.  I've seen a couple of these being loaded with cottonseed lint at the plant a few hundred yards north of this spot.

Grand Junction, TN - This is the inside of the old SOU / IC depot in Grand Junction.  Kind of an eerie shot.  I won't be surprised if this one gets torn down in the near future.

Grand Junction, TN - This is the Mississippi Central "main line" back to Holly Springs.  No wonder they're restricted to 10-mph running.  Note the old searchlight signal poking it's head out from the trees.

I found these two vintage 1959 photos  that my father, Allen Cogbill, must have taken. They show the 1959 Fourth of July Picnic grounds directly across the street from the Gin on Hwy 57. This was the traditional 4th of July picnic ground for local black families.  I remember seeing the picnics each year when I was very young. Thought that you and the folks in Grand Jct. might like to see these. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable about these annual events can fill in more
