Happy New Year Grand Junction. 

I'd like to start with my deepest condolences to the family of Estelle Vaughn.  I know she will be missed greatly by her family and friends.  Please wlecome The Reverand Docotor Virginia Jones Finzel and her husband Jay to our Grand Junction Family.  Rev. Finzel will be taking over as Pastor of the The United Methodist Churches of Grand Junction, LaGrange and Hickory Valley. They have recently moved into the parsonage on Tippah street where they will be living.  If you get a chance to meet them please make them feel welcomed to our community. Congratulations to newly weds Mr. & Mrs.Gherald Wade.   I'm sure several of you may have been wandering why the Library was closed for 2 weeks during Christmas and New Years.  The Library was being painted as well as a wonderful mural was painted in the foyer.  The mural depicts Dr. Seuss, Curious George, Mother Goose, Pinocchio and Horton from Horton Here's a Who!  The mural looks just fabulous and the infamous artists and painters were Lynette Burns and Nan Hundemer from the painting business called "Just Add Paint", they specialize in painting murals.  Make sure you try to go by the library and check it out.  Happy birthday to Paula Berry Tuesday then Wednesday is Ms.Edna Dunn's birthday Jerry Taylor's is Thursday, Chris Mills is Friday , Harold Graves and Alice Allen share a birthday on Saturday,and Nell Cooks is Sunday.  Happy birthday to all of you.  I know there is so much more interesting news and great things going on in Grand Junction Schools and Churches, please email with your exciting news you want to share with our town, Lanecadl@aol.com or cal me at 764-2205.


 

Hello Grand Junction.

 The first of next month the town will be a buzz with the starting of the National Field Trials.  The National Bird Dog Museum is still one of the best kept secrets here in Grand Junction and Hardeman County.  If you have not had a chance to tour the facility I encourage you to stop by for a  free tour and check out the gift shop. Make sure and welcome all our visitors we'll be having over the next month.  The next Board meeting for Grand Junction will be held at City Hall on Feb.2 at 7:00PM. On a much sadder note, Our town lost one of our dearest members Ms. Polly Dunn last week and I know that every one that ever knew her will miss her dearly.  Deepest sympathy goes out to her family. Things are starting to get ready for the next Annual Ruritan Pancake Breakfast that will be on March 21 at the Community Center so mark your calendar now.  There is always lots of good food and fellowship and the proceeds go to help out our community.  Tickets will go on sale next month.  Girl Scout cookies are on sale now and you can order some at the Library where there is an order form.  You don't want to miss out on these!  Have a great week and please email me lanecadl@aol.com with any news.


Hello Grand Junction and welcome to all of the Field Trial Participants.  Last week the First Grade classes at the Grand Junction Elementary school got a special visit from Lottie Dot and Patricia Belt.  Patricia and her dog Lottie Dot, were the guest during the "Pet Care" class held by the Hardeman County Humane Society.  The kids were so excited and watched  as Lottie performed tricks and let them pet her after Patricia gave a great talk on taking care of your pet and showing them how with Love and care you too can have a great pet. Joan Henderson with the Hardeman County Arts Counsil is looking for Current and retired military personnel to put on their uniform and help set the stage for the HC Art's Council's patriotic comedy, "Kilroy Was Here".  Kilroy is set in a USO Club in Brooklyn in 1942.  The performances are February 27 & 28.  For more information call HCAC at 731-658-2787.  Don't forget Valentine's day is next Saturday the 14th!!  Have a great week and call or email me at lanecadl@aol.com with any news

Hello Grand Junction.  I am so ready for Spring to get here!  I was surprised to see the Daffodils already blooming.  Here are some February birthdays coming up, Freddie Daniel has one this Saturday, Russell X. Hello Grand Junction.  Our deepest sympathy goes out to the family of Wilma Graves.  Harold and Wilma will both be dearly missed around here.  the Ruritan Pancake Breakfast is right around the corner on Saturday the 21st of March and we are hoping for a great turn out.  Ruritan meetings are on the second Tuesday of every month with dinner at 6:30pm and the meeting starts at 7:00pm.The club is open to everybody.  The Community Yard Sale is starting it's sign up.  Call Cheryl at 901-490-8804 for more information.  Have a great week. 

 


Hello Grand Junction.  Wasn't that a beautiful snow we had last week!  Now I'm ready for Springtime.  I'd like to give my condolences to Pat Reed, April and Eddie Atkins in the loss of their niece and cousin Misty Ritcheson who recently passed away.  Our thoughts and prayers will be with this family. Sharon Norris from the library has some March event news to report...Ayanna McFarland, a 16 year old Sophomore from Whitehaven High School will be our guest at the GJ Library on Saturday March 28 at Noon.  She has written a book called, "Mamma, Please" and will be signing her books that will also be on sale that day.  Parents of preteens and teenagers are encouraged to bring your kids and come listen to Ayanna explain the importance of communication between parents and teens.  Please come out and support her.  Also.....A basic Computer class will be given at the GJ library on Saturday March 21 from 9am-2pm.  The instructor will be Phil Van Dixon From McNairy County.  He will show you how to navigate the Internet and set up email.  The class is limited to the first 6 people who register.  Come to the library or call to register 764-2716. Shirley Dixon wanted to extend her sympathy to the family of Virginia Witherspoon in her passing last week.  Shirley said that Ms. Witherspoon had been her oldest current customer at 94 years old.  Ms. Witherspoon was the widow of Ross Witherspoon and also was the a Post Master here in GJ from 1971 to 1983.  The Pancake breakfast is Saturday the 21st at the Community Center, come out and support the Ruritan Club.  The Community yard sale will be April 18, call 901-490-8804 for more information.  That's all for now.  Have a great week.

Hello Grand Junction.  Happy April Fools Day!!  I'd like to start off with giving my condolences to the family of Carl Wolfe.  I will always remember him every time I see an Iris in bloom.  Carl was a member of the Iris Society in Germantown and loved his Iris's.  There was a great turn out for the Ruritan Pancake Breakfast and we'd like to thank everyone that came out and helped make it a huge success.  People are staring to gear up for the Annual Community Yard Sale that will be April 18.  Make sure to get your permit at City Hall for $1.00.  The First Grade Classes at Grand Junction held their Pet Awareness Class graduation last week and Mayor Lane and Police Chief Ryan where the special guest.  The 8 week course was taught by the Hardeman County Humane Society and Mayor Lane passed out the certificates of completion.  The children learned alot about how to take care of their pets and had lots of fun doing it.  Don't forget if you'd like to set up for the 4th of July Celebration at the Park, call Cheryl at 901-490-8804.  Call me at 764-2205 or email me with any news at lanecadl@aol.com and have a great week.



Happy Easter Grand Junction.. Here is some news from the town events committee....1. Tai Chi classes:  we still have a few openings if anyone is interested.  The classes will start on 4/16 at 7:00PM, and they will last for 8 weeks and the cost is $48.00 for the session.  Let me know if you are interested in joining us.  Tai Chi is approved by the Arthritis Association and will help in gaining muscle straight and balance.  (call 901-490-8804) 

The classes will be held at the John Wilder Community Center in town.. 2. In the month of June there will be musical entertainment at the gazebo each Saturday afternoon/evening beginning around 6:30.PM , and we would like to thank everyone that helped us to locate musicians for this event,

Hello Grand Junction.  Our town lost another sweet lady last week, Ms. Lucille Parsons passed away and I'd like to give my deepest condolences to her family. Great news for Grand Junction was the unanimous vote to pass the sell of part of the Old Cotton Gin property to allow a Dollar General Store to be built the latter part of this year.  I am so proud to see Grand Junction moving in the right direction.  There was a great turnout at the Community Center for the JECD meeting held last week.  Over 30 people attended and learned alot of what will be going on in Hardeman County in the next year.  On Friday nights there is Music on the Square at Bolivar and it is open to the public, so you might want to carry your lawn chair and check it out. Hello Grand Junction.  It sure is hard to believe it is already May.  I love this time of year when everything starts to bloom and it's all just beautiful.  The GJ Library is having a huge Book Sale.  There is a new selection of books for sale, so drop by and and check it out.  Watch for the Library's Summer schedule in next weeks article.  The Bird Dog Foundation will be hosting a Free Children's Summer READ Program starting June 10th through July 15th. Hello Grand Junction.  Make sure you don't miss the Music this Saturday Night at the Gazebo in town.  The music starts at 6:30PM and the Fire Department will be cooking something good again to eat.   There was a nice turn out last Saturday and we hope to have an even better turn out this Saturday night. So don't forget your favorite lawn chair.  A lot of work goes into pulling these events together so I encourage you to come out and help support our town events.  The Library has many great things planned for the Summer so please go by there and check it out.  On Wednesday's the Bird Dog Museum has a Reading Program scheduled from10-11am each week for 5 weeks. The people that plan these programs and events work hard for our town and they really NEED our Support to keep them coming so please do your part, tell a neighbor or friend who might not know about what's going on in town.  As always I know they appreciate all who do participate.  July 4th is right around the corner and Grand Junction is Hosting their first BBQ Contest.  The categories to be judged are RIBS and Chicken and they will also be judging homemade ice cream.   If you are interested in entering the contest call 901-490-8804 or go by City Hall for an application and more information.  The festivities start at 2:00PM at the Town Park where there will be games for kids, food and fun for everyone.  The evening will be capped off with a Firework show sponsored by the Fire Dept.  If you'd like to help put in the Celebration please let them know at City Hall.  Here are a few Birthday's this month, Chet Rall, Richard Kee and David Vinyard.  If you see them make sure to wish them a Happy Birthday.  Have a great week.


Hello Grand Junction.  I believe that we are in store for a very hot Summer this year. Happy be-lated birthday the David Vinyard who celebrated one last week. Pat Reed will celebrate her birthday on July 5th.  A big thank you to everyone that turned out for the book reading at the Library by Fox 13's Mearl Purvis.  I think I enjoyed it more than the kids did.  She did a wonderful job and kept you at the edge of your seat waiting to hear more.  If you haven't checked out the Pleasant Grove Church Thrift Store, they invite you to stop in and see all the great stuff they have.  The store is located behind the Pleasant Grove Church on Hwy. 57.  Starting at 2:00PM at the City Park on July 4 there will be a "July 4 Celebration" with games, food, and fun for everyone.  There is also a BBQ cooking contest that day. Fireworks will start around dark so come on out to the park and join in all the fun. Hello Grand Junction.  What a great 4th of July Celebration we had in town.  It's always so neat to see the kids run around and play games while the adults visit with one another.  The first BBQ contest went well and I believe that the cookers all had a good time.  The Fire Dept. put on a spectacular firework show and everyone just really enjoyed themselves.

Hello Grand Junction.  Mark your calendar for August 3 at the GJ Community Center, there will be an appreciation Reception for John Barry and Sharon Norris for their Community Service.  It will will start right after the town board meeting roughly around 7:30pm.  Cake and punch will be served.   Hope to see you there.  For those of you that are not aware of the Hardeman County Humane Society let me give you some information about the group.  There currently is not a shelter in Hardeman County but there is a Thrift Shop located at 109 East Main St. in Whiteville where all the proceeds are going into a building fund (Shelter).  The Thrift Store is in need of volunteers to help in the daily operations of the store (however many hours as possible) and will also need volunteers once a Shelter is built.  The need for a Humane Society in Hardeman County is Huge due to the overpopulation of animals that are not being cared for.  They also provide a low cost Spay/Neuter Assist Program.  For more information and how you can become involved with the the HC Humane Society please call 731-254-9777.  No matter what you can do to help the animals in Hardeman County it is greatly appreciated.  Please call or email me at lanecadl@aol.com with any news and have a great week. 

 

Hello Grand Junction.  Congratulations to Ms. Pat Tate, Vice President and Branch Manager of the Grand Junction/LaGrange Branch of the Bank of Fayette County.  She celebrated her 30th year with the  Bank on Thursday, July 31, 2009.  Ms. Tate was presented a Seiko , pearl faced, diamond studded, wrist watch for her years of service with the Bank.  Employees were provided lunch and enjoyed cake and Pat's thirty white roses during the celebration. Way to go Pat!  Last Saturday there was a "Ribbon Cutting" and Grand Opening of "Best Food in Town"  restaurant owned by Roderick Blaylock and is located at 2585 Hwy 57 E.  They will be featuring BBQ, Catfish, hot wings and much much more.  Make sure you stop by and check them out.  Anyone interested in becoming part of the "Friends of the Library", please stop by and sign up.  That's all for now, email me at lanecadl@ol.com with any newsstand have a great week.

 

Hello Grand Junction.  Here are some August birthdays.  August 12, David Dowty and Ryan Watkins,  August 16 is Becky Houston's, August 19 is Loretta Bell, the 20th is Rick Carlisle and the 22nd is Frances Gowens birthday.  If you see any of them make sure you wish them a very happy birthday.  The GJ Library will be having a YARD SALE on Sept. 5 from 7:00am until 2:00pm.  If you'd like to drop off any donations of "Gently Used Items" you can do so during normal Library Hours.  The proceeds will be used to help benefit The Bobby Martindale Library. Last Wednesday evening at the Community Center, the Grand Junction Girl Scout Troop 14, held their "Back to School/End of Summer" Celebration.  This Troop consisting of 57 girls is the largest in the Region and the head Scout Leader is Wauskeisha Hunt. Pastor Lynard Brock and his wife Barbara from Sobriety Rocks passed out backpacks with school supplies and treated the girls to some great food.  Mayor Lane spoke to the girls about the importance of going to school and trying hard and the importance of education.  Chief Ryan also spoke to the girls about staying involved in a positive influenced club such as the Girl Scouts.  With plenty of food and games the girls had a great time. If you haven't had a chance to stop by the Library and welcome Loretta Bell as the new Librarian I encourage you to stop by.  Sharon Norris will be missed dearly!  Please call or email me with any GJ News.  Donna Lane @ lanecadl@aol.com.

Hello Grand Junction. What a great sight seeing all the activity of the work starting on the new Dollar General store.  It will be such a great asset to our town.  Happy birthday to Philip Fossee this Sunday and to Frank Bell next Thursday.  Make sure you wish them a happy birthday if you see them.  On October 24 there will be a "Small Business Expo" held at the Community Center from 9am-4pm.  If you have a Small Business or an at Home Business please email me at lanecadl@aol.com for more information.  The Expo is to help showcase and promote Small Business's and Home Based Business' in our area.  There are opportunities to talk with owners to start your own business and also see products and services available you might not be aware of here locally.  Registration fee is $20.00 per space and open to the public, so please come out and help support them.  The Ruritan Fish Fry is October 3 and will be here before we know it so mark your calanders now.  There will be a Pre-School hour at the Library on September 22 from 10-11am and all pre-school children are invited to come.  That's all I have for now and thank you to all who donated for the Library Yard sale.  Have a great week and email me at lanecadl@aol.com with any town news.     

 

Hello Grand Junction. Has this weather not just been beautiful after all that rain. Hopewell MBC is the Grand Junction Host Site for Angel Food Ministries. Many of you have heard of the discounted food program, yet many have not. Check out the Web site at www.angelfoodministries.com to find out more about it. Contact your local volunteer, Lynette Burns, at 764-0209 if you have any questions or if you would like to order using your Food Stamp Card or cash. You may also order online using a credit card or debit card. The order deadline for the next pick up is Monday, October 12th at noon. You will pick your food up at Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church on Highway 57 on the morning of October 17th. This is the following Saturday and is usually ready between 9 and 11:00 a.m. Thank you Lynette for that information. This Saturday is the Ames Plantation Heritage Festival and Auction. It is a great time full of fun and Historical information. The GJ Library is hosting a "Desserts For the Deck" fundraiser in hopes to raise money for a deck behind the library that will help provide much needed additional space and a handicap ramp. It will be October 17 starting at 7:00Pm and you can get tickets at the Library or City Hall.

October 24 at the John Wilder Community center there will be a Home-Based Small Business Expo. There will be a variety of Home-Based business owners who will be showing their products or services and you'll have an opportunity to talk with them about their business opportunities. The Expo will be from 10am-3pm and everyone is invited.

Saturday, October 24th, at 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm The U of M Tigers are coming to Grand Junction.

Pleasant Grove Church will host The U of M Tiger Basketball Team during a Meet the Team Session at the church. Refreshments, Autographs, Pictures with team, hand outs, will be open to everyone in attendance.

Churches or organizations will have to pay an unlimited sponsor fee of

$125 per organization. You must have an entry pass in order to get in!

Once your church purchases the one time $125 unlimited pass, you will have unlimited access for your church or organization members only.
